You may have noticed I have a penchant for overstatement.
Nevertheless, the change in FOIA interpretation and application, a reversal of Bush secrecy policies, has historians and active journalists around Mizzou beaming.
Betty Winfield, for one, mentioned in class yesterday that this makes her very happy.
Here's my question:
“Starting today,” Mr. Obama said, “every agency and department should know that this administration stands on the side not of those who seek to withhold information, but those who seek to make it known.” - NYTIMES
Does this mean the President of the US is not only open but on our side?
Is this likely to create the conditions necessary for us to expect this of other officials? (Malcolm Gladwell would call it the Power of Context).
How can we use this expectation inserted by President Obama into the national discourse to push for more openness locally? What can that do, specifically for communities you're aware of?
