I Want To Start An Online Community Newspaper. Now What?

Inspired by the work of other independent journalists, I've begun creating a local online news site for my community. I'm going to blog about my efforts, successes and roadblocks. And I'm hoping this group will foster discussions that'll help us all.

so glad to be a part of this group! have little experience concerning work at online news site (got mostly through self education: used to read a lot on the topic and download great tutorials by rapidshare search engine), so hope this membership will be useful for me to learn more. at the same time will follow and see what I can do to contribute to what you do:)

BTW, to check domain availability, you can go to godaddy.com or networksolutions.com

Amy, one suggestion about your URL is when you have a moment to do what's called "domain mapping" so that your URL doesn't have the WordPress piece in it, but instead is just http://www.coronadelmartoday.com. That'll look more professional.

You can learn more from this official WordPress blog (http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/new-feature-domains) or just google "wordpress domain mapping."

Also, you might also consider grabbing a shorter version of your name (cdmtoday.com is taken, but others, like cdmtoday.org or .us.com, etc., are available), which can then be redirected to the main site as well.

Hope that helps! Adam

Amy -- What's the url for your site? Could you put that in your group introduction?

I am using Wordpress.com at the moment. And yes, I do use community members for news tips. For example, I am on the high school PTA reps email blast list, and I get lots of stories from her notes about prep sports results, cheerleading tryouts, parent night, etc. I am not sure how I'm going to accept news/tips/stories in the future. I'm considering trying to work with high school journalism students. All a work in progress.

I am thinking of doing the same thing. What software are you using? Do you allow community members to contribute news? I want to spread the news about community resources.

Food for thought:
Since this whole site is supposed to be for "entrepreneurial journalists in action" what do you think of putting this in the main discussion forum?

Welcome, Nan. I wasn't planning on doing a transcription of Bob's and my conversation; it was fast and to-the-point and not that juicy. But I DO plan to include his advice, as well as that from Tracy at West Seattle Blog, when their advice coincides with the topics I'm working on.

I didn't ask him why .org, but I would assume (I know, I know) that it was a domain availability issue. More ideas to come. Please also keep reading my blog. Also, can you start a discussion here in this group? Feel free!

I am glad to see this community. I went to quincynews.org - will you be printing more of your talk with the editor there? Why is it a .org? I have some great ideas. I need to hear more of yours.
