Just catching up on this one. I am with David on the general refusal to give photos to advocacy groups, but that policy has to be uniform. We do sometimes grant permission to non-advocacy nonprofits - oh, say, we take a photo of the Girl Scouts, and…

If you send a photo to a person that person could use it in a campaign. You then you might get some criticism from the person to whom the campaign is addressed. Do you need that? If I were you I would be very careful about sending out photos to ind…

I ran into this being a issue this week when I had snapped some graffiti clean up of the word "Gay."

A reader wondered if this could be a hate crime and wanted to know if I'd send her other photos to send to a local county gay rights group.

The Latest from Corona del Mar Today

No big news, just an update on a few odds and ends.

The police logs continue to take up too much of my time. They are little cut, and a week ago I met with the city attorney and city public information officer. I was all primed and ready for a big First Amendment hissy fit, but to my surprise, they sat me down and told me I was 100 percent right.

They promised to call the chief and get back to me a few days later.

They

Big Times for Little Corona del Mar Today

I've had a crazy few weeks.

The big news is that the local newspaper, The Daily Pilot, asked if they could feature my work on their website and in print. This involved a weekly freelance fee.

I agreed, then went to the OC Register, which had been using my stuff for free. This seemed like a great deal for me when it first came up last fall. It gave me a print presence, and it lent some legitimacy. And back then, the former Pilot editor wouldn't giv

Google Analytics

I actually know Danny Sullivan, the Google guru search engine guy. I've interviewed him, we live a few miles apart. Maybe I should call him.

Because Google analytics is confounding me.

I mean, I get the basics. Visitors, traffic sources, what key words people are using. But there is a lot I don't get. Bounce rate, for example. "Advanced segments." And I always forget to consi

Amy, just a heads up that we wrote about your news regarding the deals with the two local papers (congrats, btw) in our latest "What's New" blog post and have scheduled a tweet on the same for Saturday 730am ET. Good luck!

Amy --

I've been reading your blog here at the RJI Collaboratory for quite a while now (incidentally, it's how I discovered the site). You constantly offer great insight and food for thought, so I encourage you to keep up the good work!

Your blog is extremely helpful to others (like myself ;-) ) who are working to build an online news site. I have a couple quick questions for you -- I couldn't find the answers in your blog, so hopefully you can help me out!

It sounds like you started your site a little less than a year ago, is that correct? How have you been promoting the site? Purely "word of mouth," or have you done any advertising? Also -- If you don't mind me asking, how many visitors are you getting on a typical day?

I'm really trying to re-establish my site, Local-Edition.com, as a news source in our community. I used to produce a newscast for the cable system (it ran on HLN), but funding became an issue. We shut down for a while, and now I'm working to make Local Edition a web only news source. It can be really tough, though -- going from constant feedback ("I saw that piece on HLN... really liked it.") To "oh, you're still around?"

Anyway -- I'd certainly like to stay in touch -- I'm sure you can offer some great tips for me, and hopefully I can provide some insight for you as well. If you prefer to communicate via email rather than through this site, my address is ewotila@local-edition.com. Keep up the good work, and I'll talk to you soon!

Hi Amy, I know that it's probably not for someone already doing their own news site, but I thought it might get some discussion going. The company is called Neighborhood Galaxy Network (NGN) and our main news site is www.hermannmuenster.com and our national site is www.neighborhood galaxy.com. Our fee right now is $15 a week, and you have the option of selling your own local ads and keeping all the income, or having us help you sell the ads, then we get 25% of the ad revenue. Also, we haven't decided on a figure yet, but for regional and national ads (which our staff would sell), we would keep a majority of the income, right now we're talking a 25/75 split. Our ad rates are based loosely on the local newspaper's rate card. Since the weekly pulp newspaper charges by the week, so do we. Right now our weekly unique readership is at about 40% of what the pulp paper says their circulation is. Our ad rates are about 40% of the pulp paper, too. We plan to increase rates as the readership increases. There are a lot more details... let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Brian

Hello Amy, my name is Brian Chorley and I just stumbled across this website. I am part owner of a successful daily online newspaper here in Hermann, MO and I thought I'd tell you about it. We are going to offer our model up as a type of franchise business, where anyone in any zip code can pick up our template, our content, and our tech support, an be on our national network of local online papers. The only obligation, besides the franchise fee, would be to post at least one local story a day. Please let me know if you are interested in looking at our sites and I'll send you a link. Thanks, Brian
