Dan Gillmor on the future of journalism ed

Check out this post from Dan Gillmor, on the future of journalism education. He provides a great list of suggestions, and every J-school in the country would serve their students well by adopting the list. There's something that he didn't mention, though: How do you move a faculty entrenched in legacy media to change to adopt a modern approach?

Academia has four significant characteristics that bode agai… Continue

10 things every jurno should know in 2010

John Thompson at Journalism.co.uk says jurnos need to know these 10 things. He’s hit it RIGHT on the head. The only two things I’d add:

Context — with links, resources, etc…..a matrix for your news/info….nothing stands alone. He gets close to that with point No. 3:… Continue

J-Lab's New Media Women Entrepreneurs report

It says what we in this community already know....but it's always nice to have repeated:

"New forms of journalism are being created around the country where online local news sites have launched to report on their communities.

The journalism is characterized by a deliberate shift in the definition of objectivity, a drive for community conversation and discussion, and broader definitions… Continue

Hi Jane,
I don’t know what you are looking for. Here’s more than you probably wanted. Use it whatever way you would like.

I don’t know how to classify my website, . I’m not a journalist. I don’t know where I fit in. I consider myself an information broker. I focus on the activities, events and people of Atchison County, Kansas. I also include the area directly across the Missouri River as my territory. Basically I have limited myself to the 10,000 people in the Atchison area.

My town has a twice weekly paper that is owned by an outside chain. We also have a very locally focused radio station. Atchison is covered by the Kansas City, St. Joseph and Topeka television markets. As a result of the media coverage, I decided to focus only on future events and only on the web. No Facebook, Twitter, etc.

I don’t report. I announce. Every city commission meeting, school board meeting, etc is on the cable station. Right now the newspaper and radio do a fine job reporting. I consider Atchisoninfo.net like a big electronic bulletin board. I don’t offer differing opinions. In a small town, opinions are everywhere.

I’m not journalist. I am a business person. For many years I have worked in not-for-profit management. I have an MBA from KU. My husband and I own the local movie theater and could not reach our customers through the traditional media. In the movie business, our product changes constantly so reaching the market is important.

After talking to other local merchants, I realized I wasn’t alone. Instead of developing a web site for just the theater, I expanded my view to start a site that focuses only on the 10,000 plus people of this marketplace.

I launched my site in August. My big issue now is promoting my site. I need to get people in the habit of using the site. Since I plan to use local advertisers, I don’t want to sell ads until my hits are at a certain level. I think I have solved this problem with developing an alliance with other group. I’ll let you know when we have finalized the details.

Advertising has been an issue. I’m trying to convince my local merchants that are resistant to change to use a new technology. I have only one shot at being successful with them. Until I get my hits up, I don’t want local merchants to claim that my site’s advertising is a failure. I haven’t had a product I feel comfortable selling yet. I’m almost there. I have had a problem stalling potential advertisers namely our local banks. I don’t know what type of advertising will work. I am leaning toward event-oriented advertising (highlighting a sale, church dinner, etc.) I don’t want to use google ads since they are seldom local.

My biggest issues so far include keeping focus, time management and encouraging acceptance of a new technology. I now need to focus on developing advertisers and generating cash. I need to hire someone to help administer the site while I sell ads and promote the site. Since I have an older established business, banks are eager to help finance me. I’m not sure how much capital I want to sink into this.

What I like about my business plan is that it is focused on small and rural communities. I’m not working in a big community. I have benefitted greatly from the support of our local chamber, college and merchants. It’s been a fun trip. We will see what happens. Thanks for your interest. I hope my story helps you out.

Hi Jane. I left my newspaper last October and started in at University of Alaska Anchorage, on staff, doing multimedia stories for their Web site.
Working on a masters here, an mba on an entrepreneurial track. Doing well, happy in Alaska, working hard. Will be running a journalism conference up here in May. May tap you for ideas, etc.

Jane, can you share your inside on the Google links. I'm not certain how you can make any money unless you have a website with high traffic.

Hi Jane. This is very cool. I am doing part time gig at the Center For Investigative Reporting, helping with online strategy, fundraising and exploring sustainable new biz model for them and their work. Still teaching and job hunting. How are you? I am also interested in the fellows program and will read up on that.
