Also, what local news site publishers can do a phone interview?

My current research project is on local online news publishers. There are several connected to this website.
If you can answer some questions for me about how you balance the need to get advertising $$$ and the need to provide space for civic discourse, please let me know.

My email address is: markpoepsel-at-gmail-dot-com.

Quantum Mechanics, General Relativity and News Business Models

Nothing matters more at this moment in the history of American Democracy than finding business models to support journalism in the future.

Prognostications are varied, and the well-supported ones make claims that inform my research. Major claims: 1.) Journalism in America was fading in popularity and relevance/trust as commodification grew, and much of that occurred before the Internet boom; 2.) Search capabilities and overall fragmentation of media make mass communication much more difficult t… Continue

OMG I'M A MAC NOOB. Empty your Mac's Trash to Empty your Flip Camera and recover record time.

So, my sincerest apologies to Samantha Running who has been shooting and uploading vid from the Flip Mino HD every 5 minutes of shooting for the last two or three times out.

I could not figure out why the remaining shoot time was so low even though the cam recognized no files. \

Two things happened tonight: I watched the flip as it cycled thru a virus scan and noticed files that should have been long gone were still showing up. Also, I re-read the help site on http://www.theflip.com/support_ho… Continue

Mike Martin Columbia, Missouri Blogger

Notes from Mr. Martin's presentation.

Mike is a freelance journalist who writes for science publications primarily. He often distills medical research in his reports.

He started his blog in 2005 after he "suffered some defeats at the hands of local governments."

E.G. The city of Columbia received block grants to put in curb and gutters into poor parts of town that had NEVER had curb and gutter. These neighborhoods had been segregated, historically. To make up the difference that wasn't covere… Continue

Thanks, Mark! I'm glad things look good from outside. In many ways it's felt like we've had the housewarming party while the trucks were still unloading boxes, but I think by Monday it's going to finally look like home.

I have been through seven interviews now and am at the moment you might call delightful frustration. There is no single model for successful web entrepreneurship...I have seven cases and they're all different sizes and approaches to comments/news/ad…

David, I think that databasing of news will revolutionize the way people see it. As a first draft of history, news that is archived well and easily searched has the potential to be much more valuable than a bunch of one-offs and wire copy on a broad…

Remember evolution moves regarding all things and at the same time. Ben is right about trying to get money to those that write well and backing up with research. The next step is for the writer to actually entertain questions on the article gaining…

I'm thrilled that this got discussion started, and I'm sorry for inaccuracies or vaguery on my part.

Research has been question no one is addressing. As I continue to develop my hyperlocal, my biggest unknown has been figuring out how the people in my community use the internet to get information. Seems like a no brainer. In order to determine what…

And just one more, slightly less vague [and perhaps also less good ;D], thought. Micropayments as a near-future journalistic biz model have been beaten into the ground (see http://www.niemanlab.org/2009/02/the-micropayment-debate-continues/ for a su…

(I just posted this but it didn't appear, so I'm trying again; apologies if it appears twice.) This page http://www.codynamics.net/science.htm (on the site of a consultant I know nothing about) gives an OK summary of some complexity science notions…
