Profile Information

What kind of org do you work for?

self-employed

What do you do?

journalist, educator

What strengths/expertise do you have to offer?

Love anything to do with business news. Hoping to start at least two business-related news web sites in central Florida in the next 18 months. I also teach undergrad reporting classes at University of Central Florida. I have stopped freelancing while I attempt to launch these sites.

What kind of help/insight do you hope to get from this community?

I need to break through the wall that "everyone" knows - you 'can't' make a news blog or site pay. I want to create profitable sites that serve readers in my community, Orlando and central Florida, in distinct ways. One pertains to a budding medical city being built here. I have two more on the back burner. All these stories have high interest and low coverage. There's a void and I want to fill it. But I can't do it for free.
I refuse to let the collapse of the traditional print advertising model spell the end of good careers (mine for instance) and put good writers and photogs in dry storage. I am willing to bet money that we can keep these storytellers working and also enlist community members to both help us tell the stories and also attract advertisers. I need help in this mission and want advice and blunt critique from people who have scaled this mountain.
I have never been more excited about my journalism career. If people want/expect news for free then we will have to find a way to do that. Help me find the way.
Want to be a leader in providing mobile news to central Florida, and teaching UCF students to do the same.

I think we should use the RJI Collaboratory incubator to develop:

Building blocks for geographic- or topic-based local Web news sites, Ways to send mobile alerts via content management systems, Standardized platform for mobile apps
