Tim, Ben Ullman of Tega Cay (just outside of Charlotte) is using Ning as one of the J-Lab partners with The Charlotte Observer for his site, Tega Cay Talk. I'll send a link from your post to him. I'm sure he'd love to talk. Check @tegacaytalk on Twi…

BTW, great thought at the heart of this idea -- that businesses themselves would be an integral part of the news/information community. Adds such a fascinating new dimension to the traditional relationship of journalists and local businesses, one we…

Tim, a really interesting idea. We've certainly seen Ning social networks created for news purposes, such as what NPR's Andy Carvin did for coverage of Hurricane Gustav in 2008. Carvin says he had some 500 people involved, many using the network to…

The goal is to find models (templates) for journalists who want to start sites or blogs to profitably cover local news.

Inspired by the work of other independent journalists, I've begun creating a local online news site for my community. I'm going to blog about my efforts, successes and roadblocks. And I'm hoping this group will foster discussions that'll help us all.

Study: Newspapers Need to ‘Shed Legacy Costs’ to Capture Online Ad Spending

Bill Mitchell talks about who newspapers will need to transition from print to online, bringing its community with them and finding new innovative ways to produce a revenue.

This is almost obvious to a point, but what could be scarier is that some publishers don’t realize it. Smaller newspapers are putting up pay walls to protect print circulation, instead of using creativity to find new revenue streams.

Welcome to the Collaboratory Tim! You have a great project there, and very worthwhile plans to develop a business template for use by others. Being part of our community can only help! I've blogged your efforts on the site, and tweeted as well. Hope that adds to the conversation.

Meanwhile, to make it easier to get around the network, we've got a "How We're Using This Site" page that provides more detail on the different areas of the Collaboratory and the ways to make best use of them to not only share ideas, but to get projects up and running.

And you can keep track of latest activities on the network by visiting the What's New page.

Anyway, poke around a bit and if you don't see the conversation you want to have or the project you think matters, feel free to start it.

Thanks for joining us! Adam Glenn on behalf of the RJI Collaboratory
