The
Knight Digital Media Center, a great resource for digital journalists, has some upcoming training opportunities that might be especially useful for entrepreneurial journalists working on niche or hyperlocal venues.
Apply by the deadlines noted below and you could win fellowships to cover all costs of this training. Deadlines are coming up soon, so apply now. Here's what's on offer:
- Web Publishing Skills for Independent Journalists: March 21-26, UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Will cover Wordpress setup/maintenance, establishing your brand, video shooting/editing, how to sell advertising, data visualization, mapping, and much more.

- News Entrepreneur Boot Camp 2010: May 16-21, USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, Los Angeles. "Designed for 20 competitively selected digital entrepreneurs with great ideas for community news and information initiatives in the public
interest." Will cover business models, feasibility planning, audience development, customer acquisition, analytics, revenue and advertising, and much more.
- APPLY BY FEB. 19!
- Transformative Leadership Institute: July 1 - Dec. 31, USC Annenberg. "Tailored, expenses-paid professional development services to 20 top newsroom leaders from both legacy news organizations and new
entrepreneurial operations. ...[They will] participate in a 6-month long series of on-site as well as customized
virtual courses, and personal coaching/mentoring focused on their
specific skill and strategic planning needs for their organizations -- be
it newspapers, broadcast, online-only, community startups or hybrids
that provide quality news and info in the public interest." KDMC seeks nominations for news leaders. It would be great to get some Collaboratory members in on this opportunity.
- NOMINATION DEADLINE: MARCH 31!
- Multimedia Storytelling Workshop: May 16-21 and June 13-18, UC Berkeley. "Covers all aspects of multimedia news production, from basic storyboarding to the incorporation of multimedia features in
storytelling. Participants are taught the technical skills they need to
produce quality multimedia stories including audio/video recording and
editing, Flash graphics, digital cameras, Photoshop and web design
concepts."
